Join the fifth 2024 workshop of the Ice Memory Law and Governance International Research Chair
Is it possible to authorise third parties to access samples from a scientific collection/bank? What are the practical procedures for accessing environmental samples (costs, specific structure, networks, monitoring committee, etc.)? Is it a good idea to share data and metadata from a scientific collection/bank? What are the issues involved in sharing samples at national, European and international level? Should access to data and samples be given to stakeholders outside the field of research (private individuals, economic operators)?
Should everyone be allowed access to unique, irreplaceable samples such as the ice cores from disappearing glaciers? Is free access to research data on these cores, which are unique in their kind, a matter of right? What kind of governance is needed to ensure an 'ethical' selection of requests for access to the cores? What liability is there in the event of an misjudgement?
With:
- Michèle Tixier-Boichard, Director of Research in the Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology Unit at INRAE (Institut national de la recherche agronomique). She is coordinator of the CRB-Anim biological resources infrastructure and coordinator of the RARe infrastructure
- Didier Bouchel, Researcher at INRAE, in charge of steering the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol at INRAE and for the RARe research infrastructure.
